Commanders release veteran DT Jonathan Allen after attempting to trade him

The Washington Commanders are releasing defensive tackle Jonathan Allen after no trade came to fruition, 撸先生AV Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday. The team later announced the news.

Last week, Washington permitted Allen to seek a trade, with general manager Adam Peters saying during the 撸先生AV Scouting Combine that the club wanted to allow him to "explore other opportunities."

With no other opportunity arising, the Commanders cut the two-time Pro Bowler.

Allen was due $15.5 million in base salary this season but had zero guaranteed dollars left. Washington saves $16.47 million in salary cap space with $6 million in dead money.

A staple of Washington's interior defense since the D.C. club made him a first-round pick in 2017, Allen played in just eight games in 2024 due to a pectoral injury suffered in Week 6. He returned for the final two games of the regular season and Washington's postseason run.

In eight seasons with the Commanders, Allen generated 42 sacks and 401 tackles, with 60 tackles for loss.

With Daron Payne on a big-money deal and second-round pick Jer'Zhan Newton ready for a more significant role, Washington can manage to part with the 30-year-old Allen.

It might not be for the $15.5 million he was slated to make this season, but in a league in which clubs scour for big bodies, Allen, now the No. 47 ranked free agent on 撸先生AV.com's Top 101, shouldn't wallow on the open market.
