Patrick Mahomes: Ankle 'in a lot better place' heading into Christmas Day showdown vs. Steelers

Once again, Patrick Mahomes is proving he must have .

The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback is on pace to miss zero games after suffering an ankle injury in Week 15.

Mahomes said Monday that his ankle "should be in a better place" heading into the Christmas Day showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"We haven't done a ton as far as getting out there on the practice field," Mahomes said . "We've done a walk-through, actually two walk-throughs now, and I feel like I can move around and do what I need to do and now we'll get to get to a little bit faster-paced practice and see where I'm truly at. But I thought, all in all, I came out pretty well.

"Obviously, the body's going to be sore just with a short week and everything like that, but I think the ankle should be in a better place. We'll see in practice [Monday], but as far as how I felt after this game compared to the one before, I'm definitely in a lot better place."

Mahomes needed to be helped off the field in the Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns. Six days later, he completed 28 of 41 pass attempts for 260 yards with a touchdown, took one sack, and rushed five times for 33 yards and a score in a win over Houston.

Given that performance, there is no concern about the star not suiting up for Christmas. Mahomes noted that he plans to put on a better show than last year's Grinch-of a performance against Las Vegas.

"It is really cool playing the first Netflix game, playing on Christmas Day in front of the whole nation. It's an honor, and so we will go out there trying to do what we can to not have the same experience we had last Christmas," he said.

The Chiefs can clinch the No. 1 overall seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win. Coming out on top will ensure that ankle tweak will have extra rest before K.C. gears up for its three-peat attempt.
