The NCAA honored him as the 2019 Champion of Diversity & Inclusion for his efforts as an advocate for equality in sports. He mentors minority coaching candidates, scouts, and executives, and sponsors and provides grants and scholarships for educational and professional development in football and athletics through multiple endowments for women and HBCU graduates.
Pioli holds a Master's from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in Television, Radio and Film, and an undergraduate degree from Central Connecticut State University.
